So, you finally booked the family session (yay!) and now…Your mind goes straight to the stress spiral.
What are we going to wear?
Will the kids cooperate?
What if someone melts down right before golden hour?
Take a deep breath. You are not alone. And you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
I created a free Family Session Prep Guide to make this whole thing feel easier, calmer, and honestly, more fun. It’s packed with everything I’ve learned from years of photographing real families with all of the meltdowns, muddy shoes, giggles, and all.
Below are a few sneak peeks from the guide to help you get started, and you can download the full version at the end of this post.
1. Choose Outfits That Coordinate (Not Match)
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans!
Instead, start with one outfit (usually Mom’s) that feels comfortable, confident, and true to your vibe. Then build the rest of the family’s look around that by using 3 to 4 coordinating colors that mix textures and layers.
A few tips:
- Start with neutrals, then add a couple of soft pops of color
- Avoid neon, logos, or more than one bold pattern
- Think seasonally: earthy or deep jewel tones for fall, lighter hues for spring
The goal is to look cohesive, not identical to feel like you.
2. Let the Kids Be Kids (Seriously)

Please don’t worry if your child doesn’t want to “sit still and smile.”
The best photos often come from:
- Running around
- Climbing on Dad’s shoulders
- Snuggling in with messy hair and a cheeky grin
You don’t need to apologize for being human. Let the silliness happen.
That’s what we’re here to capture! Your real, wild, wonderful family just as they are!
3. Plan for the Details That Make a Difference
A few small things can go a long way:
- Full bellies = happy faces
- Pack mess-free snacks, backup clothes, and water
- Bring along a small treat or reward for afterward
- Add a little time buffer so no one arrives rushed or flustered
- Don’t forget the shoes — they show in the photos
The real magic, though? It comes from a relaxed attitude and open-hearted energy. Come as you are. Come ready to play. That’s when the good stuff happens.
4. Include the People (and Pets) That Matter
Your family story includes everyone, and yes, that might include a furry best friend.
If you’d like to bring your dog to your session, I’d love that. Just make sure:
- The location allows pets
- You bring a leash, treats, and water
- You bring a friend or sitter to help when your pet isn’t in the photo
The photos you’ll treasure most are the ones that feel like home! Even if that means a little paw print chaos along the way.
