Let’s be real. Choosing your wedding photographer isn’t just about loving their photos.
You’re choosing someone who will be with you through some of the most emotional, intimate, and joy-filled hours of your life.
So yes, the images matter. But so does how you feel around them.
That’s why I created a free Wedding Photographer Checklist for couples who want to feel confident and supported in choosing someone who gets them and not just someone with a nice Instagram feed.
I’ll walk you through a few of the most important things to consider here. If you’re looking for a little more guidance, the checklist is available at the end of this post.
1. Connection is Everything
Your photographer will be with you more than almost anyone else on your wedding day.
So ask yourself:
- Do I feel relaxed and comfortable around them?
- Can I be myself in their presence?
- Do they seem calm, supportive, and fun to be around?
If you feel safe and relaxed, your photos will reflect that. The comfort you feel in front of the camera shapes the story your images will tell.
2. Consistency Over Curation
Instagram shows the highlight reel, but what does a full wedding day actually look like?
Ask to see:
- A gallery from start to finish
- How they edit in different lighting situations
- Whether their style stays consistent across moments, moods, and skin tones
You want your gallery to feel like one story. Not a mix of trends and filters.
3. Direction Without Awkwardness
You shouldn’t have to know how to pose. That’s your photographer’s job.
Look for someone who:
- Offers clear, gentle guidance
- Helps you feel at ease in front of the camera
- Adjusts little things like hair, hands, or angles so you don’t have to overthink it
The best photos happen when you feel held, not judged.
4. Emotional Storytelling, Not Just Aesthetic Shots
You’re not hiring someone just to take pretty pictures. You’re hiring someone to preserve the feeling of the day.
A strong photographer will:
- Anticipate emotional moments before they unfold
- Capture both the big and the barely-noticed
- Focus on your people, not just the details
Your gallery should feel like a doorway back to the day. Not just a collection of images, but a story you can step back into.
Looking for Something to Help You Decide?
If you’re in the early stages of planning, I made something just for you.
It’s a free checklist that walks you through:
- What to look for in a photographers work
- How to know if someone’s style really fits you

You don’t have to figure it all out alone and in the dark.
This is a gentle guide to help you choose with clarity and confidence.

Q: Is the checklist only for couples booking with you?
Not at all. It’s free to anyone who wants a little extra guidance. No pressure, no expectations.
Q: Can I print it?
Yes. It’s simple and designed to be used during your planning process, whether that’s on paper, your phone, or with a glass of wine.
Q: What’s something most couples overlook?
They forget to ask how a photographer handles the unexpected. Experience, communication, and calm presence make a huge difference when the day doesn’t go exactly as planned.
